With the present situation where working from home is the new normal, I find that I am spending considerable time on social media. Since most businesses have shifted to the online platform, advertising online is also the new norm. So, last week, a mailer advertising Seiko watches was sitting pretty in my mailbox. It wasn’t of much interest to me at first. I didn’t need another watch – besides, where was the occasion to wear one, I wasn’t going to office nor were there special events to dress up for, no outings or parties. Everyone was just staying safely home.
But that mailer set me thinking, why not pick up a nice watch while the prices are low? I could gift it to someone or better still why not treat myself to a good daily wear beater? The advert was for the Seiko 5 Automatic 21 Jewel SNK809K1 SNK809K Men’s Watch – it looked wonderful. Let me confess. I am a fan of Seiko watches. In my humble opinion, the brand makes some of the most durable, reliable and quality watches that don’t cost an arm and a leg.
The Seiko 5 series was introduced way back in 1963 with an aim to design an affordable automatic watch. The numeral 5 stands for the five tenets around which the watch was built – an automatic movement, water resistance, the day/date feature, crown located at 4 o’clock (unlike other watches which have it at 3) and a durable case and bracelet.
Surfing through several online watch sites, the Seiko 5 Automatic 21 Jewel SNK809K really stood out. It’s not what you’d call a stunning piece that would make heads turn, but a simple yet solid one that you could wear every day. A workhorse type of watch that you could rely on, exactly what I liked.
This Seiko 5 Automatic is a simple black dial with printed white Arabic numerals for hour markers in the inner ring while the outer circle marks the minutes. There are clear white seconds markers at the edge of the dial. The hour and minute hand are filled with luminescent paint which glows quite well in the dark. The red pip on the seconds hand is a nice touch.
Another nice touch to this timepiece is the exhibition case back that shows you the 7S26 automatic movement in motion. Watch enthusiasts will love it – as for me, I enjoy watching the levers and the gears turning steadily when the watch is flipped.
Several variants of the Seiko 5 Automatic are available, you’ll find quite the display at https://www.citywatches.ca/?s=Seiko+5+sports&post_type=product I chose the Seiko 5 Automatic 21 Jewel SNK809K1 Men’s Watch for its sturdy looks and of course the affordable price that City Watches Canada https://www.citywatches.ca/ has pegged it at.
