On account of the goldish coloured beard he sported, the folks in the small town of Jasper affectionately called him Thomas ‘Ginger’. Thomas Ginger was the town’s only recreational race driver.
Thomas Ginger had a Ford mustang and a custom build Corvette. He also owned the town’s only auto garage and tow truck. Now in his sixties, Thomas Ginger, gave up racing and instead coached his young nephew Allan to drive. Allan worked in the local police force.
Whenever Allan would drive the Mustang or the Corvette which was usually just before beer time, we would head for the “track”. This was basically a large open field with an imaginary track. Allan would do a few laps around it and after he finished, some of us would also do a round or two in the same car.
Thomas Ginger would use an old stop watch and time Allan as he did the circuit. Thomas’s birthday party was due next month in July so we all decided to chip in and buy Thomas a nice watch with a timer function. We managed to collect close to CDN $700 and even the barman chipped in with a 50.
Given that Thomas was a traditional sort, we decided that the watch model would have to respect that. We gave the task of selecting an appropriate watch to Allan. He being young and all, we felt he was best suited to surf the internet or whatever and locate a nice piece.
A week later when we met at the Whistle Stop Pub, Allan opened his laptop and showed a beautiful looking traditional watch but it had all the bells and whistles including the all-important stop watch. He said it was the Zeppelin Night Cruise Chronograph Quartz 7296-1 72961 100M Men’s Watch with a retail price tag of CDN $687 but was being sold at CDN $450. Which meant we would around CDN $250 of our collect left; sufficient for a decent sized cake and several packs of beer.
Allan informed us that the Zeppelin Night Cruise Chronograph Quartz 7296-1 72961 100M Men’s Watch was made in Germany and that it had 3 sub-dials. The one at the 2 O’clock position of 1/10 second stop watch. The one at the 6 O’clock position acted as the seconds hand and the open at the 10 O’clock position added the minutes of the stop watch. He said it was a “tachymeter” we nodded intelligently though I doubt if any of us including myself understood what a tachymeter was in relation to a watch.
For us old men, it was sufficient enough that Allan felt it would do the job and the rest of us agreed that the watch did look very impressive and that it had German tech. All this was good enough for us. So, we approved the purchase and handed over the money in cash to Allan. He immediately logged into his laptop and bought the piece for CND $450 from https://www.citywatches.ca/ which he said was the best site to buy wrist watches.
Well, when the big day arrived, Thomas Ginger was suitably impressed. He even had a tear for us when he said he felt overwhelmed to have friends like us. I say cheers to that and cheers to the that the Zeppelin Night Cruise Chronograph Quartz 7296-1 72961 100M Men’s Watch for making our day.
The next time we were at our little race track, Thomas no longer had his old stop watch. Instead, he sported his all new Zeppelin Night Cruise Chronograph Quartz 7296-1 72961 100M Men’s Watch.
